Sea Change

The Soundwaves Vinyl Of The Week is Sea Change by Beck.

Sea Change from 2002 became a pivotal moment in his discography as he traded the eclectic weirdness of Odelay for a raw, introspective folk-rock meditation about heartbreak. Inspired by a painful breakup, the album unfolds like a late-night confessional, with string arrangements and acoustic intimacy that evoke the stylings of Nick Drake or even early Bob Dylan. It's someone being vulnerable—a gorgeous blend of mournful country-rock, pop, and even psychedelia.

Standout tracks capture its emotional core—the shimmering opener "The Golden Age" sets a tone of weary optimism with its hypnotic groove; "Lost Cause" delivers a devastatingly tender ballad of resignation, often hailed as one of Beck's finest moments; and "Guess I'm Doing Fine" closes the first act on a note of defiance amid the ache.

Relationships make people do funny things, or in Beck’s case, it showed his genius thrives in the stillness. Nearly 25 years on, Sea Change remains a timeless salve for the broken hearted.
