From the moment the first notes rang out, Joe Russo's Almost Dead delivered a high-energy, high-quality performance that solidified their reputation as a must-see act. Having attended their shows at the Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom for three consecutive years, this particular night stands out as the absolute favorite. Joe Russo's Almost Dead (JRAD) is widely acclaimed as the premier interpreter of the Grateful Dead's vast catalog, known for their improvisational prowess and unique, high-octane approach to classic material. This review will delve into the performance, atmosphere, and overall impact of their latest Hampton Beach appearance.
The atmosphere at the Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom was overwhelmingly positive. From the moment the doors opened, there was a palpable sense of excitement and anticipation. The crowd was clearly having a fantastic time, with an infectious energy that permeated the entire venue. Everyone was enjoying themselves, dancing, and fully immersed in the music. There were no opening acts for this concert, allowing the band to take the stage and command the audience's full attention from the very beginning.
The setlist for the night was a journey through classic material, showcasing the band's improvisational prowess. The first set kicked off with a "Jam" leading into "Catfish John" and a highlight performance of "The Music Never Stopped." The set continued with "Crazy Fingers," "Good Morning Little School Girl," and "Cats Under the Stars," before concluding with a killer set one closer of "Bertha," which truly ignited the crowd.
The second set opened strong with "Alabama Getaway," another high point of the night. It continued with "Big River," "Viola Lee Blues," and "Black Peter," before moving into a powerful sequence of "The Eleven" flowing seamlessly into "Truckin'," both of which were definite high points. The band returned for a memorable encore of "All Along the Watchtower."
The sound quality throughout the show was fantastic. The mix was clear and balanced, allowing every instrument and vocal to shine without any muddiness or overpowering elements. There didn't appear to be any issues with the production at any point, contributing significantly to the overall high-quality experience.
My overall experience was one of pure joy and a solid night of excellent music. The band is undeniably at the top of their game, consistently delivering performances that set the standard for a Grateful Dead cover band. They not only meet but consistently exceed expectations. If you ever have a chance to see them play near you, do not hesitate—just go! This show was a powerful reminder of why JRAD continues to be a driving force in the live music scene, providing an unparalleled journey through the Grateful Dead's catalog with their unique, high-octane energy.
