From YouTube, to The Eras Tour, to headlining TD Garden in Boston, it’s been a wild couple of years for Gracie Abrams. A soft, determined singer songwriter, who gives off a “college girl at an open mic” vibe kicked off her The Secret of Us -- Deluxe Tour at the Garden. A sold out highly anticipated show that I walked into blind.
I know Gracie Abrams and her music but hadn’t seen her in person yet. The reigning princess of Gen Z sad girl pop, the arena was packed with bow wearing fans. They knew every word and belted them out with all the emotion Gracie had poured into the lyrics.
A little over an hour and a half set list walked you through her greatest hits, a few deeper cuts, and a master class of both nostalgia and current day moments for her fans. At one point she glides around the crowd in the pit, touching hands, taking selfies as she worked her way to a replica of her bedroom set in the middle of the area. This stage, a reference to where she got her start singing songs on YouTube, and hoping someone would see it. She sparkles as she plays a song that she rarely performs and dedicated it to a fan who has been there supporting her entire whole time. (To be named dropped by Gracie on opening night is something special)
Being at opening night of a major concert tour has always been a bucket list item and Gracie did not disappoint. Working the stages with both an acoustic and electric guitar, she had command of the arena and her fans. The audience knew every word and screamed them back to her with an intensity I hadn’t seen since Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour. She was walking them through heart break, the hopefulness of young love, and confusion of young adulthood, giving them a roadmap to survive it.
The Secret of Us -- Deluxe Tour was a triumph. An emotional, raw, arena debut by an artist just hitting their stride. Wherever the music industry takes her, Gracie and her fans are sure to be filling arenas for years to come.
