Magic Under the Green Monster: Phish Closes Summer Leg with a Historic Night at Fenway

There’s seeing Phish, and then there’s seeing Phish at a historic venue like Fenway Park. Closing out this leg of their tour before taking a well-deserved break through August—ahead of their final three-night blowout at Dick's Sporting Goods Park over Labor Day Weekend (Sept 4, 5, and 6)—the band delivered an absolute masterclass in tension, release, and high-energy jam vehicle mastery.
From the opening notes, the atmosphere inside and outside the ballpark was electric. Chris Kuroda (the unofficial fifth member of the band) and programmer Andrew Giffin outdid themselves. Their state-of-the-art kinetic lighting rig engineered with automated moving truss sticks that tilt, descend, and shift on high-speed winches transformed the Fenway stage into a living, breathing architectural sculpture.
Watching the rig constantly reconfigure in real time into geometric boxes, sweeping waves, sharp angular slants, and deep overhead arches while illuminating the night sky was pure magic. Beyond the visuals, the crowd energy was unmatched: the massive sing-a-longs carried right over the Green Monster and echoed down the streets of Boston.
The mood was pure joy, made even better with the Soundwaves crew rolling deep—shoutout to Jason Landry taking in his very first show and Troy catching his second! Watching new ears experience Kuroda "playing the rig like an instrument" alongside thousands of singing fans made an already special night feel historic.
As a longtime fan, I can confidently say this show had everything you could ever want from a Phish experience. The playing was razor-sharp, the transitions were seamless, and the jams were tight, focused, and deeply rewarding.
Set 1: Pure Momentum
The tone was set immediately with a dark, energetic My Friend, My Friend (sans the traditional "Myfe" ending) that melted directly into an early-set Tweezer. Rather than taking a backseat, Sigma Oasis brought an incredible, unexpected dynamic as Trey took a turn on the mini drum kit—a treat he repeated later in Set 2 with No Men In No Man's Land.
The band kept the foot on the gas with a relentless run through Chalk Dust Torture, Stash, and Ruby Waves in Set 2—notably leaving all three unfinished, favoring seamless flow and raw exploration over formal resolution. The Set 1 closing sequence of Stash -> Tweezer > Sand had the entire crowd roaring before a single note of Set 2 was played.
Set 2 & Encore: A Tour-Closing Masterpiece
Set 2 kicked off with a thunderous Mike's Song and never looked back. The middle of the set featured a deep, soaring Light (complete with a subtle Melt the Guns tease from Trey) before resolving into a jubilant Weekapaug Groove. Closing the second set with a back-to-back gut punch of Ghost > Possum turned Fenway into one massive, city-wide sing-a-long at maximum volume.
To cap off the night, the encore gave us the ultimate contrast: a heartfelt, breathtaking Wading in the Velvet Sea to catch our breath, followed by an explosive Character Zero into the inevitable, roof-raising Tweezer Reprise.
I’ll see Phish anywhere, anytime—but wrapping up this leg under the lights at Fenway Park with great friends, fresh fans, and top-tier playing is a memory that’s going to stick around for a long, long time. Now, bring on Dick's!
