The last time I saw Zakk Sabbath play was in a hot, sweaty club in Boston, MA in October of 2017. It was only three years after Zakk Wylde started his side project playing Black Sabbath cover songs. And if there’s one person on this planet that could pull it off flawlessly, it’s Zakk.
Tonight’s show (the first of a two-night doubleheader) at Wally’s in New Hampshire was pure metal magic! Packed to the gills, the audience (all 400 of us) were in for a real treat seeing that Zakk, dressed in his signature tartan kilt and vest usually plays much larger venues.
The band ripped through the Sabbath classics “Supernaut” and “Snowblind” right outa the gate while routinely lifting his purple Wylde Audio guitar over his head as if he was sacrificing it to the gods. “Fairies Wear Boots” and “Children of the Grave” were particularly awesome, but nothing beat the last two songs of the night, “N.I.B.” with that filthy bass line intro, and then closing the show with the an epic rendition of “War Pigs” with an extended improvised solo.
As we all made our way to the exit, the night ended with a lengthy chant of “Ozzy!…Ozzy!…Ozzy!” May we never forget the boss or the band who put heavy metal music on the map.
