Wet Leg, Moisturizer

Andrew Ross, contributor and host of the show Spin This!

Wet Leg's Moisturizer builds on the cheeky, surf-rock-infused post-punk of their 2022 self-titled debut, delivering a more polished yet equally audacious follow-up. Where Wet Leg burst onto the scene with raw, playful anthems like "Chaise Longue" and "Wet Dream," Moisturizer sharpens the edges, blending tighter songwriting with bolder emotional depth. Tracks like "CPR" and "Catch These Fists" pulse with the band's signature irreverent energy, driven by Hester Chambers' jagged guitar riffs and Rhian Teasdale's sly, crystalline vocals. Yet, songs like "11:21" introduce a reflective vulnerability, exploring love's messier corners with a sincerity that feels new for the duo. The production is crisper than the debut's lo-fi charm, amplifying their infectious hooks without losing the DIY spirit that made them stand out.

Compared to Wet Leg's self-titled album, which thrived on youthful spontaneity and tongue-in-cheek humor, Moisturizer feels like a band maturing without sacrificing their edge. The debut's carefree vibe occasionally leaned on repetitive structures, but Moisturizer diversifies its palette, weaving in moody synths and tighter rhythms while maintaining the Isle of Wight duo's knack for earworm melodies. It's less a reinvention than a confident evolution, proving Wet Leg isn't a one-hit wonder.

Their NPR Tiny Desk Concert performance underscored this growth, with Teasdale's vocals soaring on "11:21" and the band's chemistry radiating warmth and precision. Stripped-down renditions of both Moisturizer and debut tracks like "Angelica" highlighted their versatility, blending intimacy with their trademark wit. Moisturizer is a thrilling step forward, cementing Wet Leg as a band with staying power and a knack for balancing heart and havoc.
