Billerica’s own Knife Tricks makes a memorable debut with their self-titled EP. A live-tracked collection that leans into raw chemistry, instinct, and room energy over polish. Recorded at Bleeding Ear Studio in Lowell with producer Derek Blackburn, the project captures a band laying it down together in real time, and the result feels honest and unfiltered.
Opening track “Tsb,” written by guitarist Alex Sahagian, sets the tone with layered riffs and a structure that unfolds gradually. Sahagian and Scott Macedo trade off lead and rhythm responsibilities, weaving guitar lines that blur the line between structure and spontaneity. Scott O'Hayre locks in the low end on bass, while drummer Steve Lundquist provides the heartbeat, particularly on “Numb,” one of the EP’s most emotionally resonant moments.
Knife Tricks writes from the ground up, building out musical ideas before lyrics take shape. That music-first approach gives the EP a fully lived-in feel. More like a snapshot of a band mid-evolution than a neatly wrapped package.
The band name, a nod to Ernest Hemingway, hints at the literary sensibilities behind the grit. Paired with bold cover art from Alex Fitch (known for work with Tool), the visual aesthetic matches the sonic one: heavy, thoughtful, and confidently raw.
Knife Tricks doesn’t overreach. Instead, it lets its sound speak for itself. It’s a strong first step from a band finding its voice and laying down the foundation with edge, intention, and tone. Crank it loud and keep your eye on what’s next.
